Commenced 1888 Opened 11 September 1889 Closed 2 February 1947 (to Eureka) 1 December 1986 Technical Line length 11 km (6.8 mi) The line was closed to passenger services in November 1930. Shepherd Daughters Grave New information emerges about young girl's grave that has fascinated for more than a century   ABC Ballarat By Dominic Cansdale The gravesite in bushland near Lal Lal can be found near a popular hiking path.  Supplied: Greg Johns/Hiking Fiasco   History researchers have uncovered new information about a six-year-old girl's lone grave in central Victorian bushland that has fascinated locals and hikers for more than 150 years.  The Shepherd's Daughter's Grave, south of the Bungal Dam near Lal Lal, is believed to belong to Mary Paterson, who may have died while droving sheep with her family in July 1867.  The most common story shared among locals is that Mary contracted pneumonia during wet weather, with flooding along the nearby Moorabool River blocking doctors from the area and forcing her family to bury her body in bushland.  But research conducted by the Ballarat and District Genealogical Society has uncovered i...

The History of Ballarat's Victoria Park

  Victoria Park :  This expansive park, covering 130 hectares, is situated at the intersection of Sturt and Gillies Streets in Ballarat, Australia. Its layout has remained largely unchanged since its initial design and planting between 1890 and 1910. Originally, the land was considered a necessary public reserve, and in 1861, the Ballarat Council sought to specifically reserve it as a park. During that time, it was locally known as   “Royal Park.” Crown Grant:  In 1888, the Crown Grant officially reserved the land as   Victoria (Royal) Park , covering 325 acres. It was vested in the   Mayor, Councillors, and Citizens of the City of Ballaarat   for the purpose of a public park and related facilities. Mining Interests  Despite its primary purpose as a public recreation facility, mining interests were also present within Victoria Park.
