The name Kangaroo changed to Berringa around 1879. Berringa was originally part of the Piggoreet Run, taken up in 1838 by pastoralists John James Barlow Smythe and Henry Gibb and was among the earliest district pastoral properties. Berringa was situated at the southern end of what was known as the Staffordshire Reef Ranges. Alluvial gold was first discovered within the ranges in the early 1850s.
